"One of New York City’s most legendary party spots of the aughts, the Jane Hotel Ballroom and Rooftop is officially closing on November 20; I note it was sold in February 2022 to hotelier Jeff Klein, a west-coast operator who once owned the Monkey Bar with Graydon Carter. I learned Klein plans to convert the space into an East Coast outpost of his members-only San Vicente Bungalows club, part of a broader move toward private restaurants for wealthy clientele, while rooms at the landmarked Jane Hotel will remain bookable indefinitely as the hotel undergoes renovations next year. The building itself dates to 1908, opening as the American Seamen’s Friend Society Sailors’ Home and Institute and even housed survivors of the Titanic in 1912; I recall the New York Times in 2009 describing its mix of “hip young bankers” and old- and new-style tenants as giving it a distinct "wash-ashore" quality as West Street evolved from shipping to hip." - Emma Orlow
