"A longtime Logan Circle Southeast Asian staple since 2012, Doi Moi has just added a limited four-course comeback prix fixe created by its original Laotian-born chef de cuisine Deth Khaiaphone ($65, dinner Mon–Thu) while continuing chef de cuisine Jaime Guevara’s regular Vietnamese street-food menu. I learned the prix fixe — developed from two rounds of guest tastings and running for about 60 days so the most popular items can graduate to the à la carte menu — features choices like a fish sauce–slathered scallop carpaccio with fried garlic crunch or crispy oyster mushrooms; a standout summertime dish of beef and rice noodles wrapped in grape or lolot leaves and grilled, served with Khaiaphone’s homemade sambal and a bounty of herbs and micro red shiso; and a dessert of tapioca soup with Champagne mango coulis, fresh coconut chunks, and a honey tuile. Managed by Star Restaurant Group, the restaurant also highlights pho, bánh mì, steamed buns, flash-fried beef jerky, dumplings, fresh-pressed juices, and $8 fruity daiquiris until 8 p.m. daily, and sits at 1800 14th Street NW; its 2020 tropical redesign and a new permanent parklet with tapestries and Asian lanterns give the space a vivid, street-facing presence." - Tierney Plumb
