City-State Starts Pouring Its D.C.-Themed Brews in Edgewood This Weekend | Eater DC

"Occupying a 13,000-square-foot space off the Metropolitan Branch Trail at 705 Edgewood Street NE, I visited City-State Brewing Co., the nearly six-year project from neighborhood resident and former congressional aide James Warner. The microbrewery and taproom opened with seven D.C.-themed beers on tap — 8 Wards Independent (pale ale); Equal Marriage (dark wheat); Blossom (kolsch); Red Bud (hibiscus kolsch); Featherduster (hazy ale); Trainspotter Green Bullet (pub ale); and NEDC (pale ale) — and is starting with hours of 3–10 p.m. Wednesday–Friday and from 10 a.m. on weekends (open later for the opening weekend). Inside, a wall of framed, colorful posters honoring neighborhoods (with rolled-up prints by local artist Anthony Dihle available for purchase with a free beer) and scrappy DIY touches like a reclaimed-school chalkboard lined with purple LEDs and bright orange Bavarian picnic tables give the space a local, hands-on vibe. Brewing happens across interconnected brewhouses — a 20-barrel system for larger batches and a five-barrel system devoted to experimental brews and contract/custom small runs — an aggressive 25-barrel inaugural capacity, and nonalcoholic options made on-site include iced mint and oolong teas, club soda, and locally roasted Swing’s cold brew. I liked the transit-friendly setup (DDOT will install 19 bike racks along the trail and it's within walking distance of Rhode Island and Brookland Metro stops), the upcoming sprawling patio with trail access, the Trainspotter pub ale that nods to direct views of passing Amtrak and Metro cars and to Warner’s college-era connection to Trainspotting, and the playful addition of Killer Queen, the world’s only 10-player arcade game rescued from a closed bar." - Tierney Plumb
