"I discovered a new fast-casual Japanese restaurant dedicated to onigiri that opened in mid-October at 6929 Airport Boulevard in the Crescent shopping plaza in Highland. At Rice Ball Co., the rice balls, aka onigiri, are hand-packed rice filled with ingredients, shaped into a triangle, and then wrapped with seaweed; options include staples like spicy tuna, beef, and grilled salmon, and more untraditional choices such as fried shrimp and mayonnaise, bacon avocado, shitake mushrooms with eggs, and crab. The counter-service restaurant also offers “rice rolls,” which are essentially hand rolls without pointed bottoms, with similar fillings plus unagi, yellowtail with green onions, and spicy scallops. For fuller meals there are bento boxes with entrees like chicken katsu, salmon teriyaki, and bulgogi, and sides include fried dumplings, fruits like honey yuzu, teas, vegetable bites, and coffee. Rice Ball Co.’s hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily." - Nadia Chaudhury
