"I stood with a group of teenagers in front of a beige one-story house on a tree-lined street in Compton, waiting at the window where Cheyenne Brown operates Fun Diggity out of her home, and watched her hand over towering, deep-fried funnel cakes dusted with powdered sugar and piled with fresh berries, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, swirls of whipped cream, and strawberry sauce as she cheerfully said, “Have a fun diggity day!” Brown, a Miss Compton 2013 winner who launched the business in 2016, perfected her recipe by frying every night for 11 months, and the result is a funnel cake that comes out piping hot with a crispy exterior and a pillowy interior that holds its texture even an hour later; toppings range from cereal and Oreos (which she deep-fries) to Nutella and fresh fruit, and the cakes can stand on their own without powdered sugar. She built her customer base via Instagram and word of mouth among neighbors, working parents, medical workers, and multigenerational families, adapted to Los Angeles County COVID safety protocols, accepts online pickup orders and delivery-app orders, and even sells a mix on her website; her stated goal is to open a permanent storefront in Compton — ideally with parking, seating, and a drive-thru — while keeping the business rooted in the community she loves." - Mona Holmes
