"Opening Friday, December 14, this massive new Wawa at 150 S. Independence Mall West in the Public Ledger building fills 11,500 square feet — more than 2,000 square feet bigger than the chain’s second-largest location in Washington, D.C. The company calls it a “historic, one-of-a-kind store,” and it stands out for a sleeker style and features that embrace its Old City, across-from-Independence-Hall location: seating, plants, two indoor “Philly Firsts” murals by Mural Arts artists Keir Johnston and Willis Humphrey (with matching Mural Arts designs on the coffee cups available only at this Wawa), and a Once Upon a Nation storytelling bench. Opening day starts at 8 a.m. with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m., and the celebration will include a “Philly Firsts” parade on Chestnut Street at 8:45 a.m. featuring history makers and mascots, plus giveaways and hoagie-building competitions." - Rachel Vigoda
