"I visited the husband-and-wife team behind a Portland kosher brewery that every year interprets Rosh Hashanah into a limited-edition beer reflecting high-holiday flavors and traditions. In 2023 they brewed a pomegranate blonde ale in collaboration with Seattle-based Muriel’s All Day Eats, inspired by owner Sonia Marie’s tradition of making fesenjan (Persian pomegranate chicken stew); for 2024 they made Party Like It’s 5785, a stout with dates, honey, and cinnamon named for the upcoming Jewish year — Marie describes the flavor as about “bringing forth the sweetness of the new year with the dates and the honey and the spices of the season.” They try to be expansive in representing diverse Jewish traditions so people can find a bit of their own heritage in the flavors. The 2024 beer will be available exclusively on tap starting October 2, and Leikam will also offer challah from a local baker; the brewery positions these releases as a way to foster connection for Portland’s Jewish diasporic community and plans to host Sukkot and Hanukkah events later in the year." - Rebecca Roland
