How a New, Family-Owned Ethiopian Restaurant in Shaw Is Surviving the Pandemic - Eater DC

"Situated in D.C.’s “Little Ethiopia,” Family Ethiopian Restaurant is among the latest Ethiopian restaurants to open in the area, which hosts the biggest Ethiopian community in the United States. Despite its young reputation, Family serves a robust list of Ethiopian staples, including the lamb tibs and doro wot. The chef and owner, Seferash Yegezaw, moved from Ethiopia to St. Louis, Missouri, before opening Family in D.C. in memory of her brother Moges. The restaurant faced challenges during the pandemic but gained community support after a viral tweet. It stands out for its simple decor, attentive staff, and offers vegan-friendly options like the veggie combo platter. Family imports most of its spices from Ethiopia and serves imported Ethiopian beer and tej. It also offers catering services and has a hookah and lounge bar above the restaurant. The restaurant is open daily from noon until midnight." - Manon Jacob
