"Opened in 1978 as a gay disco, this Montrose nightclub is one of the nation’s longest-running alternative clubs and has long served as a sanctuary for misfits — queer people, art kids, punks, goths and anyone seeking an accepting, 18-and-up space. Across four decades it gained a reputation as both an influential concert venue that showcased up-and-coming underground bands and a crucial gathering place during Houston’s gay rights movement and the AIDS crisis, with extensive archival material and promotional videos documenting that history. Its long-running Friday night dance party, Classic Numbers, is known for deep New Wave, goth and industrial cuts (with Wes Wallace DJing nearly every week since 1991) and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The venue has weathered ownership changes, the 2013 death of a longtime owner, periodic closure rumors and a pandemic shutdown in 2020, but it reopened weeks ago and remains the subject of a nearly decade-long documentary by Marcus Pontello that premiered there at the end of July." - Brittanie Shey
