"After four years on the westside, Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles is headed east, moving into a prominent 4,000-square-foot corner space at 325 Hughes Center Drive on the Hughes Center’s Restaurant Row; paperwork shows the franchise founded by Larry “Lolo” White is remodeling lighting and seating but not doing a huge interior overhaul to the light-filled main dining room framed by 30-foot-tall glass windows that originally included a central bar, and no opening date has been announced. Phoenix-born and still open at the Best of the West shopping center on Rainbow Boulevard, the self-described “scratch-made soul food favorites” spot — which Larry calls “laid-back, no-frills” — has become a magnet for celebrities like Chris Rock, Shaquille O’Neal, and Muhammad Ali. On the menu are hood classics such as chicken gizzards and rice, shrimp and grits, blackened catfish, smothered chicken, banana pudding, and the famed namesake chicken and waffles, which I found delicious." - Bradley Martin
