California Mini-Chain The Kebab Shop Brings Doner Kebabs to Austin - Eater Austin
"San Diego-based fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant The Kebab Shop is expanding into Austin for its first out-of-state location. The Texas restaurant will be found at the Arboretum at 9761 Great Hills Trails sometime in July. The main dish on Kebab Shop’s menu is the doner kebab. It’s a Turkish dish made up of roasted spiced chicken, lamb, or beef carved off a rotating spit, and placed within a sandwich. Kebab Shop also offers options like fries, rice, salads, and a plate. Co-owner Wally Sadat said that Austin just made sense for their first non-California location. “A lot of our customers messaged us to open in Austin cause our brand is a little different than market Mediterranean concepts,” he told Eater. “Mostly cause we’re just a bunch of weirdos who are just trying to make doner kebabs approachable.” Sadat’s brother-in-law Tony Farmand opened the original Kebab Shop in San Diego in 2007, and the entire family helped out.
