"Outside the shop at 918 1st Street in Benicia, co-owners Hanalee and Catherine Pervan have turned their sci-fi fandom into edible art: after creating a viral trio—Pain-dough-lorian, Baby Dough-da, and the Pandroid—they built a life-size Pan Solo (Han Solo frozen in carbonite) this year for the Downtown Benicia Main Street Scarecrow Contest, installed for free viewing through a few days after Halloween. They prepare three months in advance and ramp up three weeks before the holiday, working the bakery by day and sculpting by night; their intensive, dough-based process relies on “dead dough” (yeastless, higher sugar) so pieces hold shape, baking bottom sections until they’re “rock solid,” assembling them onto wood and metal, and using a heat gun for finishing while coping with expansion, shrinkage, and cracking. They love puns (Java the Hutt), considered Audrey II but found it logistically impractical, and have Guardians of the Galaxy ideas for next year; Pan Solo is one of 28 creations in a 47-business event, will eventually be composted, and voting ends Sunday, October 23 — yet the Pervans say the fanfare will live on and they’re already planning next year." - Paolo Bicchieri
