"If all the stars align, a new Andytown Coffee location will open at 800 Great Highway by early November; it will be the chain's fifth location and its first in the Richmond District, designed as an ode to the historic Playland at the Beach that once stood where the shop will be. Owner and co-founder Lauren Crabbe says they’ll pay homage to Playland’s claim to fame—the It’s-It ice cream sandwich, invented by George Whitney in 1928 and sold after the park was demolished in 1970—by serving an It’s-It affogato in which the It’s-It is split in twain and coffee is poured on top, a creation Crabbe calls “basically the best thing ever.” The team is testing versions starting with the classic vanilla It’s-It and exploring other pairings (she imagines a single-origin natural-processed Ethiopian coffee with a strawberry It’s-It), and the new shop will be the only Andytown to offer the item; otherwise the menu will be fairly similar (and yes, Snowy Plovers will be on deck). Before the official opening, Crabbe is inviting neighbors to an October 15 Edge Fest Community Day pop-up where the Andytown truck will introduce the business, offer tours of the new café, and serve It’s-It affogatos." - Paolo Bicchieri
