Ocean views, surf vibes, and unique It's-It affogatos

"Andytown’s Great Highway outpost hit the jackpot in the beachside real estate market—the Richmond cafe is just steps away from the beach, and the floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light (they also have locations in SoMa and the Sunset). The welcoming spot is home to strong espresso, plants hanging everywhere, and a TV playing surfing competitions or otter live streams overhead. We like to spend a slow morning here with a brown sugar latte and one of their excellent pastries before heading down to Ocean Beach to play fetch with an overexcited dog or take a windy seaside stroll. "The westside of San Francisco has a penchant for surfing and It’s-Its, and the newest Andytown Coffee Roasters location across the street from the Pacific Ocean satisfies both. Taking over the ground floor of 800 Great Highway, this cafe shares in the expansive views of Ocean Beach with building-mates Ocean Plant. Books, swag, and, yes, surfboards are all for sale at this buzzy coffee shop, too." - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater Staff

"When Andytown Coffee opened its new Richmond District location at 800 Great Highway on November 21, I found a bright, plant-filled shop with tons of natural light (many plants courtesy of fellow building tenants Ocean Plant) and an unbeatable ocean view — as owner Lauren Crabbe says, “I don’t know anywhere else in the city where you can get coffee and look at the ocean like that.” The opening was insane, with neighbors flocking over in droves. Like other Andytown spots, the menu includes the chain’s baked goods (including its famous Irish soda bread) and Nana Joe’s granola, and Happy Moose juices and a full tea selection remain on-site. For the first time the It’s-It affogato is available alongside regular It’s-It ice cream sandwiches served sans espresso — “that’s the showstopper,” Crabbe laughs. This is Andytown’s largest location by a stretch, and the Ocean Plant partners are excited to bring in community partners: the Surfrider Foundation has already hosted meetings here, Recess Collective created a kid’s corner, and the space stocks San Franpsycho clothing, Green Apple Books, and Tunnel Records’ music selection. The Richmond location is open 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday." - Paolo Bicchieri
"If all the stars align, a new Andytown Coffee location will open at 800 Great Highway by early November; it will be the chain's fifth location and its first in the Richmond District, designed as an ode to the historic Playland at the Beach that once stood where the shop will be. Owner and co-founder Lauren Crabbe says they’ll pay homage to Playland’s claim to fame—the It’s-It ice cream sandwich, invented by George Whitney in 1928 and sold after the park was demolished in 1970—by serving an It’s-It affogato in which the It’s-It is split in twain and coffee is poured on top, a creation Crabbe calls “basically the best thing ever.” The team is testing versions starting with the classic vanilla It’s-It and exploring other pairings (she imagines a single-origin natural-processed Ethiopian coffee with a strawberry It’s-It), and the new shop will be the only Andytown to offer the item; otherwise the menu will be fairly similar (and yes, Snowy Plovers will be on deck). Before the official opening, Crabbe is inviting neighbors to an October 15 Edge Fest Community Day pop-up where the Andytown truck will introduce the business, offer tours of the new café, and serve It’s-It affogatos." - Paolo Bicchieri
