"A tire-shop parking-lot stand in Wallingford brings a lively, bilingual street-food vibe to North 45th Street, serving Venezuelan hot dogs that start with a regular steamed dog tucked into a split-top brioche bun and then get buried under generous toppings. The lineup runs from a simple dog to mechipan (with hard-boiled egg and rich shredded stewed beef, carne mechada), and the full “con todo” build piles on egg, diced onion, cabbage with carrots, papas al hilo, carne mechada, shredded cheese, mustard, ketchup, and mayo—humongous, best tackled with two hands. Despite the dairy, egg, and two meats, the textures play well: fried potatoes and onions add crunch, egg yolk and cheese melt into the juicy carne mechada, and the cabbage makes it a full meal; the only downside is a slightly undercooked dog that would benefit from a grill, but the super-savory carne mechada easily earns its extra two dollars. Drinks include Frescolito (with an almost bubble gum-esque flavor), Coke, and Maltín (a malted cola). Most patrons are Venezuelan or Spanish-speaking, with delivery drivers fueling the steady flow; Fido and Michel run the two-man stand, now aided by a printed English menu, and if words fail, ordering “uno con todo” gets you the most bang for your buck.
