"Opened by the Martinez family on 10th Street in the heart of Midtown in 1995, Zocalo was converted from a gas station and built around family recipes passed down through generations; in its early years many ingredients weren’t available in Atlanta and were often shipped from Chicago and Mexico or packed in suitcases by visiting relatives. Chef Lucero Martinez-Obregon and her brothers remain involved in day-to-day operations, and with Rreal Tacos owners Damian Otero and Miguel Hernandez now holding a majority stake, I was told they plan to bring “new energy and new systems” while keeping the name and most of the menu. The refresh includes returning original dishes such as blue corn quesadillas stuffed with mushrooms, poblano pepper rajas, and chorizo, a torta Cubamex, and sopecitos surtidos topped with steak, pork chicharrón, queso fresco, crema, and green salsa, plus new margaritas added to the bar program." - Beth McKibben
