"In Gowanus I found a run-of-the-mill Brooklyn coffee shop that opened down the street from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que a few weeks ago; inside there are bags of Partners Coffee beans, avocado toast on multigrain sourdough with furikake, and espresso drinks with twists like a pumpkin pie latte. For $4.50 I ordered an unlikely modern-day coffee-shop egg cream to go in a plastic cup: it’s made with Fox’s U-Bet but, for quick-service ease, uses Topo Chico instead of a siphon seltzer bottle, producing a finished product that’s less foamy than the classic with salty notes from the sparkling mineral water and that teeters on too sweet; it’s served with regular whole milk (or vegan oat milk) and you can add a double shot of espresso. While I still prefer the meditative experience of sitting down to enjoy a traditional egg cream paired with a Reuben, Beanmonger’s fast-casual take is a useful pick-me-up for a dreary day and convenient for the stroller-heavy crowd nearby." - Emma Orlow
