"Opened in 2018, the Enchanted Poutinerie in Toronto has drawn attention for a so‑called “unicorn poutine” that layers multi‑coloured cheese curds (the menu claims the curds are from Quebec, though it seems likely they were dyed at the restaurant) and an unnaturally multi‑coloured gravy over fries; I think the result looks like ’90s Nickelodeon toy Gak melted and poured on potatoes. The dish appears to be a bid for viral attention — the official Canada Twitter account even posted an image of the “birthday cake diarrheapoutine” — and it provoked strong backlash. Oddly enough, the rest of the menu is mostly fine, with a classic poutine, a breakfast poutine and various fusion options (including a jerk chicken poutine), and the owners say they opened because they loved “making crazy poutine concoctions.” I view the unicorn version as a travesty and an example of cultural appropriation that does a disservice to Quebec’s poutine tradition." - Tim Forster
