"Opened in Back Bay at 125 Newbury St., Jonquils Cafe & Bakery puts desserts front and center while also serving an array of cafe fare like sandwiches and espresso. Pastry chefs Dinara Kasko and Dmitriy Shurygin make pristine, geometric desserts with shiny and textured glazes that reveal further surprises upon cutting; shapes resemble apples, cherries, and even coffee beans, and the treats feature layers of mousse, cake, jelly, and more. Kasko, who initially intended to become an architect, is known for using a 3D printer to produce the silicone molds used to shape her desserts. In addition to the eye-catching confections, the food menu includes grab-and-go items, familiar pastries like croissants and danishes, and three tartine options topped with beet hummus, marinated mushrooms, and whipped avocado; starting Monday, June 17, Jonquils will also serve a selection of sandwiches and quiches and steamed bowls of oats, veggies, or grains. Coffees are made using a Kees van der Westen multiple espresso boiler machine or a pour-over system with beans from local roaster Gracenote, and there are loose-leaf teas, hot chocolates, and juices. Jonquils operates 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week." - Dana Hatic
