"A family-run independent meat processor rooted in Siler City, Chaudhry’s Halal Meats began when Abdul and Shamim Chaudhry started slaughtering animals on an uncle’s farm because they couldn’t find halal meat locally; after operating under the radar of the USDA for over a decade, Abdul purchased and refurbished a nearby processing plant to legitimize the business. Today the company, one of the few independent meat processors in the Carolinas and well-known in North Carolina’s agricultural community, employs nearly 30 people and is the only approved beef processor in the state for Whole Foods. Having passed day-to-day operations to their sons Wasim and Atiq, the business continues to provide certified halal meat to Arab and Muslim customers while expanding into sustainable agriculture, processing products for farms and businesses across the state including Baldwin Grassfed Beef and Durham-based Firsthand Foods." - Matt Lardie
