"I learned that first-time restaurateur Josef Gonzalez will bring more than 40 years of family recipes to Bicho’s, a new Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant opening September 21 at 3917 N. Mississippi Avenue in Portland. Raised in a Salvadoran family in the Bay Area, Gonzalez opened the spot because he noticed a lack of Salvadoran options inside Portland’s city center and wants to offer the foods he grew up with without making locals drive out of the city. The main focus will be on pupusas—10 varietals including cheese and zucchini; cheese and chicken; and beans and cheese—served with curtido (a vinegary Salvadoran slaw) and salsa. In addition to pupusas, the menu will include Mexican classics like flautas, chile relleno, burritos, and tacos; a simple breakfast lineup of breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, and huevos con chorizo; and wine, beer, plus cocktails such as sangria and margaritas. Gonzalez says he’s excited to see people’s reactions and expects diners to love the food and smile on that first bite." - Rebecca Roland
