The Best New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, March 2025

"Bicho’s opened in October and its extensive menu offers Mexican restaurant standards like huevos rancheros and chile relleno burritos alongside generational recipes from owner Josef Gonzalez’s Salvadoran family. First-time diners won’t go wrong with a two-pupusa plate, with filling options like pork or cheese and loroco. The pupusas, griddled hot with molten cheese, are complemented with tangy, pickled curtido, cheesy beans, and fluffy rice. Enjoy a Mexican-style horchata or try the cinnamon-y drink Salvadoran style, which uses dairy milk for a creamier taste." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Mid-Week Lunch Restaurants in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"It’s always a special day when more pupusas arrive in your area. Especially if the pupusas descend flanked by flautas, chile relleno, burritos, and tacos. Bicho’s comes from Bay Area-raised Josef Gonzalez, a first time-restaurateur looking to deepen the Rose City’s Salvadoran food. If that sounds good to you, start here." - Paolo Bicchieri

Portland Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed | Eater Portland

"First-time restaurateur Josef Gonzalez opened Bicho’s to bring more than 40 years of his family’s Salvadoran and Mexican recipes to Portland; I note the menu features pupusas, burritos, tacos, and more, and it opened on October 11 at 3991 N. Mississippi Avenue." - Rebecca Roland

Salvadoran and Mexican Restaurant Bicho’s Will Bring Family Recipes to Portland | Eater Portland

"I learned that first-time restaurateur Josef Gonzalez will bring more than 40 years of family recipes to Bicho’s, a new Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant opening September 21 at 3917 N. Mississippi Avenue in Portland. Raised in a Salvadoran family in the Bay Area, Gonzalez opened the spot because he noticed a lack of Salvadoran options inside Portland’s city center and wants to offer the foods he grew up with without making locals drive out of the city. The main focus will be on pupusas—10 varietals including cheese and zucchini; cheese and chicken; and beans and cheese—served with curtido (a vinegary Salvadoran slaw) and salsa. In addition to pupusas, the menu will include Mexican classics like flautas, chile relleno, burritos, and tacos; a simple breakfast lineup of breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, and huevos con chorizo; and wine, beer, plus cocktails such as sangria and margaritas. Gonzalez says he’s excited to see people’s reactions and expects diners to love the food and smile on that first bite." - Rebecca Roland

Google
I followed this place on instagram awhile now and finally decided to stop in and get a plate. Prices are fair, pupusa are loaded with food and flavor. Place is very clean, staff was friendly. Definitely will be back if the area again. Street parking only can be difficult.

Revés

Google
Las pupusas revueltas are spot on—perfect with the curtido and salsa. But the rest of the Salvadoran menu feels a bit lost in translation (that horchata definitely wasn’t the real deal).

Google
Lovely people, excellent food, very nice space. This is some of my favorite Mexican food in Portland. I think they make the best taquitos in the PacNW! We've been here twice and both times we've enjoyed everything about the experience!

Google
My family and I went to Bichos for dinner and the food was really great! The service was amazing! The woman who took our order was a fantastic multitasker, super friendly and kind, and very efficient! She was taking orders, managing the grill, running food, all with a cool and collected manner. I got the Al Pastor Super Burrito and it was good! The rice had a very great texture, it was flavorful, the Al Pastor was a little too saucy for my preference but the flavors were good. I was happy to see a vegetarian option (Happy Burrito) since my fiancé loves vegetables and would prefer them over meat. They really enjoyed it! The Mexican Horchata was very delicious and refreshing without being overly sweet. The Salvador Horchata was also really good! I was unsure of what it would be or taste like but it was very refreshing, perfect amount of sweetness, a little nutty, and reminded me of Abuelitas Chocolate (I’m unsure if that’s what it’s supposed to be). All of the servings were huge! We were a party of seven dining inside and it felt just a little cramped but it was still a nice time.

Google
This place is such a hidden gem. It may not look like much, but the food here is phenomenally tasty. We had fast, courteous service, the place was clean and well kept, the music was loud enough to be heard but not so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. Highly recommend eating here and trying it for yourself. The grilled chicken quesadilla is delicious!

Candice R.

Google
Umm, what to say... Giant burrito, super delish, great price and they know what they are doing. Had 2 Chile Relleno burritos, one with Chile Verde one with no meat. Honestly, this burrito is just heaven and you can't go wrong either way you order it. 10/10 my now go to spot for a solid, giant Chile Relleno burritos.

Google
absolutely loved the pupusas! we also got the fried plantains which were phenomenal!! the chips weren’t my favorite w the chips & guac, they were super crispy. the service was great and the portions were generous! i will be coming back :)

Google
I drive 45+ minutes to come to Bichos because I love it so much. I am obsessed with the chile relleno burrito (add carnitas) and get it every time. My husband and I usually get other items to try something new everytime and we have not been disappointed. Staff is very friendly, service is quick and the restaurant is very clean. Love you guys, see you again soon! 💕

Yelp
You've got to try this Salvadoran & Mexican place on Mississippi! They are so friendly! I love pupusas (my friend is married to an El Salvadoran man and taught me how to make them). They are even better if I don't have to make them! We both got the 2 pupusa plate that came with beans & rice. I got one zucchini & cheese and chicken & cheese. My husband got jalapeño & cheese and zucchini & cheese. He liked the jalapeño one best and I liked the zucchini the best but honestly they were both excellent. We ate outside under a shelter, but inside was super clean and colorful. The restroom was very clean too. Come eat at Bicho's-especially if you haven't had a pupusa!

Yelp
The food was good! I feel like it could have been a bit less oily or maybe that's just their style? The Salvadorian horchata was very good! Tasted great and it had a great after taste. The service was also good! A little slow but I'm sure the food takes time, so I'm not complaining! 4/5 stars - I'm just not a big oil fan. Especially when you lift the food up and it's just a pool of oil.

Yelp
Was disappointed in our lunch today at Bicho's. We ordered quickly, there was barely anyone in there and one group ahead of us. We had two pupusas and an order of the taquitos dorados, chips and salsa and two drinks. Prices were a little large for what we ultimately got. First, the chips and salsa: chips okay, definitely not freshly fried but the salsa was terrible. It was sweet and I laughed later to see another review asking why everything tasted like ketchup, because that's exactly what the salsa tasted like. After we ordered we got the chips and salsa immediately and then ... 40 minutes went by waiting for our other three items. The group in front of us already got their food and left, though it appeared they had an issue with their food too. I understand they make each order as it comes in, and perhaps they had a lot of to go orders -- but 40 minutes for two pupusas (cheese versions only) and w very small plate of chicken taquitos? Yikes. The slaw with the pupusas was old tasting. The staff seemed agitated and kept running back and forth to the back. The guacamole on the taquitos was okay but a little tangy, in the way that you know it's a bit old. Overall I'm saddened by this experience, I had really hoped to find a cool spot to enjoy a few pupusas and some authentic Sal food. Be prepared for a long wait and lack luster food.

Yelp
Pretty solid pupusa as far as texture goes, and it wasn't greasy. However, it was just not very flavorful. I suppose I'm pretty spoiled because my mother in law makes freaken amazing ones. Lots of options to try and friendly service.

Yelp
Very cute vibrant decor. The best part was the cheese and jalapeno pupupsa. Amazing cheese pull. The $8.00 chips and salsa was not fresh. Chips were stale and the salsa was more than mild, it was about as spicy a catsup. Been and rice were solid and the chile relleno was better than average. For 2 relleno plates 1 pupusa and chips and salsa, no drinks was almost $50. Order at the counter with self service. Glad we tried it but won't return.

Yelp
best new spot on mississippi imho!! fresh, amazing papusas and more !!! cant wait to try their breakfast!!

Yelp
Heard good things about this place and decided it was time for me to try it myself. And it was really delicious, I had a super burrito with a margarita and it was perfect proportions filled with flavor. Service was great and my food came out timely even though it was pretty packed. Definitely excited to go back and try their pupusas which look really good.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. Haven't had pupusas in years and it's exactly what I needed. A little hot to be there on a 100° day, but delicious nonetheless.
google avatar

Yelp
We love Mexican food so we're excited to try this Mexican and El Salvadorian food. We loved the carne asada burritos and quesadilla. The El Salvador and Horchata was delicious. The service was friendly and fast. We look forward to returning.

Yelp
Amazing service, ambiance, and food! This was our first time at Bicho's. When we entered, we were greeted by one of their amazing employees. She helped us decide what to eat because we were so hungry, and everything looked delicious. Haha! The food was flavorful, and the portions were generous. The ambiance was quiet, and it wasn't packed when we visited. They also have this beautiful mural! If you're ever visiting Portland, make sure you stop by Bicho's.

Yelp
This is our second time coming here, this time we brought family with us. The short version is the Mexican food is better than the Sal. My wife had carne asada, and loved it. Again the drinks are great, aquas frecas. They have both mex and sal horchata... how cool is that. The rice is great. The yuca and chicharon was really good, it's more like pulled pork. The beans with platanos needed much more flavor. The pupusas were ok, nice cheesiness, but not enough flavor. The red sauce that comes with it, also not enough flavor. Everyone that worked there were very friendly and that counts for a lot. Someone got sopes.... They were huge!!!!!! She could only eat one and a half. The place was packed, so good for them. I think they can be even better, more salt.

Yelp
It was a busy night in the neighborhood and we were happy to stop in and try out Bicho's. We had never been before, but my partner and I love a good pupusa. The guy at the counter was super friendly and helpful. Sometimes Portland is lacking in customer service, and he definitely had good customer service! We ordered some pupusas, a chile relleno and a couple of margaritas. The Margaritas did take a little bit to get out to us, but they were very pleasant - It would have been nice if they were a little bit stronger. They were also making the food very fresh and so it did take an extra minute or two because of that. But it was worth it! The pupusas were perfectly cooked and balanced with the cheese/ jalapenos that we had ordered. The hot sauce was really tasty and had a kick to it. I don't think anything tasted like ketchup like other reviews have said. All in all, I think everything was really good, a little pricey for the service style. The outdoor seating was perfect! We will definitely check it out again!

Yelp
we tried this place on a whim because the line at Porque no? was too long. I ordered the regular burrito al pastor. It was filling and I couldn't even finish it. Very delicious. My wife ordered the pupusas with Carnitas. I asked her to read it on a scale of one to 10. She gave it a seven. Taken into account that the only other pupusa that she had was at a restaurant in McMinnville called Abuela's Nuestra Cocina", which she gives a 10. She also ordered a couple of shrimp tacos that were good but not great. With that said, my wife ordered stuff without a lot of the ingredients that usually come with the item. For example, she ordered this without cilantro or onions. I think that could have taken away from the overall flavor, so I wouldn't blame the restaurant for what she said is a lack of flavor. I'll also add that the margaritas were smaller than I would've expected for the price. It was $15 for my jalapeño margarita and we didn't taste much alcohol. My wife said that it just tasted like juice. Check out the picture so you can see the size of the glass that it came in. Lots of ice. Good flavor, though. Overall, a good place to grab a bite to eat.

Yelp
This place was great. Really good service, great pupusas, and tasty horchata. Folks working there were really nice and the restaurant seems like a nice place to sit and eat. We ordered for pickup but looking forward to spending more time there!

Yelp
So delicious, super authentic. The pupusas are amazing! Very clean, simple layout/ambiance. Good music. Friendly service. I love coming here.

Yelp
Had lunch here today and it was so delicious! Got a pork, cheese, and bean papusa and a super taco with carne asada. The papusa was so good! Loved how it was cooked and it was a good portion size too! The super taco was so stuffed it definitely was surprising how much was in it. It was a little messy but flavor wise did not disappoint. Loved the orange and green salsas that came with it too. Can't wait to come back .
google avatar

Yelp
I was stoked to try this place out and now that it finally opened up I have to say I love it!!! The staff was super friendly and accommodating as I had a few questions for them wanting to make sure my shrimp wasn't too spicy but they gave me an option of a more medium spice to it. Safe to say it wasn't too spicy which I do have a higher tolerance so I'm excited to try it out next time spicier. Next are the pupusas. I will admit, this is the first time I've ever had them so I'm not sure where they rank but I can say they were absolutely delicious and I think my favorite part was it didn't taste or feel greasy. It was easy to eat and tasted incredible. The place was very clean as well. I'd say the food was a TAD and I mean the slightest bit rad on the saltier side but overall this place is amazingly good and I will definitely be coming back for more!!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Probably the BEST burrito I have ever had! I ordered the Super burrito, wet with Green sauce! Absolutely amazing and HUGE! all of us LOVED our food! Spicy Jalapeno Mags were great too! Friendly service, and very clean. You do have to order at the counter but the food makes up for that!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by to try with the family and this place will be definitely on our usual rotations. The food is delicious, authentic and flavorful. The service is wonderful and pleasant. Recommend: - Super nachos -All the pupusas -Chicken Torta -Chimichangas

Arthur P.

Yelp
Amazing food. Really good burrito, nice location and atmosphere. I enjoyed the carne asada burrito with mild salsa. Will be back!
google avatar

Angel P.

Yelp
first thing i noticed is that the staff were all inviting & smiling when we walked in. it smelt so good in there, we were excited to eat! ordered One Pupusa Plate & a Carne Asada plate to-go. everything tasted good. there was a salsa that came with the pupusa plate but it didn't taste like much. overall would eat here again :)
google avatar

Anisa E.

Yelp
I was excited to see a Salvi/Mexicanspot pop up and knew I had to visit! I was pleasantly surprised at how big the sope was. Everything tasted great! My only gripe was the pricing on everything, this may just be me but it seemed like each item was $2-3 more than I see at other spots, but that's probably to be expected on Mississippi.
google avatar

Claudia C.

Yelp
One of my new fav spots for Mexican and Salvadorian food! The food is full of flavor and comes out fresh.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic pupusas handmade to order. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Will be back as soon as I can.

Joe C.

Yelp
A smallish amount of bad cafeteria food. Refried beans and rice were sad. Fajitas looked more boiled than hot sautéed. Doesn't meet standard for main drag restaurant and price.
google avatar

Megan W.

Yelp
Great new addition to Mississippi avenue. The good was so good and the service was amazing. The restaurant is a cozy welcome on a rainy day.

Cheyenne K.

Yelp
Disappointed in our meal at Bicho's. $11 for a very tiny, flavorless and runny portion of guacamole. Chips were very stale. The pupusas were pretty flavorless as well. Could have been made better with good sauces but the only sauce provided tasted like watery ketchup. Don't see myself returning. The staff was very nice though.
google avatar

Ian B.

Yelp
By far the best el Salvadorian food on Mississippi. Black beans are boss. maybe the best chile relleno in the city limits. high marks for the yellow rice, fresh corn tortillas and loroco pupusa.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
How they get five stars is beyond me. This is a quick serve restaurant style where you order and wait for your food. It took over one hour to receive taquitos and one taco.....and why does everything taste like ketchup.

alex t.

Yelp
I just had the best, cheesiest pupusas outside of San Francisco. I got the plate, which comes with 2 pupusas, rice, refried beans, and curtido. Everything was delicious. The pupusas and curtido were ON POINT! My partner had a giant burrito and also loved it. Their hot salsa was delicious and not super spicy (for us). I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
Food is always fresh. Fries are amazing and the fry sauce is incredible. OMG Love the simplicity and consistency of everything here. The service is also top notch. Friendly and professional.
google avatar

Mario C.

Yelp
So happy to find a place with good papusa! I got the revuelta... soo good! Staff is friendly and attentive, I will be back for sure

Hannah U.

Yelp
Fun, lively restaurant with tasty food! Food came out fast, very hot and large portions. The plantains were extremely delicious and the pupusas hit the spot! Bichos is a must if you're ever visiting Portland
google avatar

Xiomara G.

Yelp
Incredible food. The pupusas were flavorful and full of fillings. They definitely do not skimp on fillings nor the sides of curtido and salsa. We also had yucca as a starter and were very impressed by the texture of the yucca. The meat also was not overcooked. All in all would highly recommend. Five stars!

J H.

Yelp
I had the cheese and jalapeno Papusa and the Super Burrito with asada, and they were both really good. The hot sauce is tasty too!

Sarah K.

Yelp
Amazing food, friendly staff, beautiful space. We have been craving pupusas and their Two Pupusa plate with rice and beans hit the spot. Our only regret was that we were too full to get more.

Isabella M.

Yelp
Solid lil Salvadoran joint. Pupusas were tasty and a great portion size for what you pay!

Steve R.

Yelp
Pupusas were decent. The kid's burrito is too expensive- 11 bucks for a simple bean and cheese burrito. Service was good and quick for us, no complaints there. Overall, very ok food but the price was too high for the quality. Can't see myself returning when there are so many other great restaurants nearby.

Leslie H.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place but was highly disappointed.. the "40 year old recipe" was like at any other taco place. The guacamole was brownish color, not fresh at all. Overhyped and overpriced.

Mariska M.

Yelp
Took over an hour and a half to receive my taco. One taco. And I was not the only one who had to wait that long, all of the customers in here with me waited the same or longer. The owner came over and said humans make mistakes and they do orders one by one.

Don K.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and very good food. Priced right. They are new so very enthusiastic. Give'em a try...it is well worth it.

Tanner O.

Yelp
The pupusas were amazing. Food came out very fast and the restaurant had a great atmosphere. Staff was very accommodating and answered all the questions I had. Will definitely be making this my go to spot.

Ian S.

Yelp
The the pupusa's were amazing. The environment was friendly and overall, it was a great experience. I'd recommend it.
