"In Foster-Powell, a vast, industrial brewpub opened on March 23 called Assembly Brewing, serving American beers, cocktails, and Detroit-style pizza in a renovated 7,500-square-foot space. Co-owner George Johnson, who started as a homebrewer and amateur pizza chef before studying professional brewing and pizza-making, says it was always going to be in his neighborhood and that the spot was underrepresented; his beer program is refreshingly straightforward with $5 brews like “Stout,” “IPA,” and “Amber” he wryly calls “beer-flavored beer,” a few $6 ciders on tap, and a modest $5–$8 cocktail menu because “we want to be accessible to the neighborhood,” though they might add specialty beers later. Johnson also learned pizza in Detroit from Shawn Randazzo, and his thick, square Detroit-style pies come in two sizes with classic toppings such as meat-lovers, Hawaiian, and veggie gourmet, while sandwiches, salads, and traditional pub grub round out the menu. Co-owner Adam Dixon owns the building—a former Korean grocery store—where the team exposed massive wooden beams, used reclaimed wood for the bar and booth backs, and installed a 100-year-old maple railcar–floor bar top, and a mural by commissioned local artists pays homage to Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals but with brewers; Assembly Brewing is open daily from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m., and all hours are currently 21+ only." - Alex Frane
