"Founded in 2013, Detroit Vegan Soul bills itself as Detroit’s first all-vegan soul food restaurant and opened on an empty block on Agnes Street in West Village; co-owners Kirsten Ussery and Erika Boyd later opened a second location in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood on Detroit’s west side. I found the menu notable for plant-based takes on traditional soul food — specifically the flame-broiled seitan steak rolls and the cornmeal-battered tofu “catfish.” The pandemic hit the business hard: the co-owners closed temporarily in March 2020, briefly reopened in August 2021, and in January 2022 announced the permanent closure of the original West Village location." - Eater Staff
