"I saw that sheriff’s officers forcibly changed the lock on this neighborhood bodega in Brooklyn after it accumulated thousands of dollars in unpaid fines: the deli, located at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Broadway, was found guilty of 18 civil violations by the Sheriffs Office and Department of Consumer Affairs, including importing untaxed cigarettes and selling loosies. Long a neighborhood go-to for cheap packs of cigarettes and hot food, the practice of importing cartons from Virginia (where the excise tax is 30 cents per pack versus $5.85 in New York City) combined with other fines resulted in over $66,000 in damages and the store’s closure." - Luke Fortney
