"A New Orleans Tex-Mex mini-chain with a cult following (and a small but vocal group of detractors), Juan’s Flying Burrito is planning to reopen on Oak Street after closing its Uptown Magazine Street location due to rising rents; co-owner Jay Morris said they “were fortunate to be able to grab the space” at 8140 Oak Street, the former Live Oak Cafe. The restaurant began in 1997 on Magazine Street in the LGD, inspired by San Francisco Mission-style burrito joints but given a punk-rock aesthetic and Creole twists to menu staples like nachos, tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, and it became known for a lively atmosphere, strong margaritas, and affordable pricing. The chain has expanded over the years (a Mid‑City location opened in 2002, a CBD spot in 2014, and the Juan’s at the corner of Magazine and Joseph Streets has been around for five years), and owners hope to open on Oak Street sometime in August once they secure a liquor license and make updates “to make it more Juan’s-ish.”" - Clair Lorell
