"Inside a former antiques store on Peachtree Road in historic downtown Chamblee, I discovered Antiguo Lobo, a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar opened by Jesús Oñate Jr. that honors his late father with a menu drawing from multiple regions of Mexico. The space resembles the restaurants Oñate Jr. grew up in, featuring vintage-inspired booths and bar seating, sarape-pattern accents, and a back-wall mural dedicated to his father that even depicts his first car in America — a 1977 Pontiac Can-Am; there is also a large open-air patio in front of the building. Menu highlights include Molcajete El Monstruo (with a choice of steak, chicken, or shrimp served in a volcanic rock mortar), enchiladas verdes, pollo al mole, street corn, aguachile, and a selection of tacos served in fresh-made corn tortillas. Cocktails, created by Oñate Jr.—a trained tequila expert and certified Master mezcalier—center on margaritas and other agave-based drinks like mezcal. The restaurant also continues a family legacy: Jesús Oñate Sr. immigrated from Jalisco in 1971 and opened his first restaurant in Chamblee before expanding to multiple local eateries." - Beth McKibben
