"Opened over the weekend by Misha Kachkachishvili and Diane Heying of Esplanade Studios, Lamara Coffee & Kitchen is a healthy, “low-waste” coffee shop and cafe on Broad Street (1300 N. Broad Street) offering coffee, tea and smoothies alongside a vegetable-focused but hearty menu: breakfast tacos with spiced tofu and beans, avocado and cashew crème; a high-protein waffle with berries; a twist on eggs benedict; and lunch options such as a lentil and tempeh burger, rainbow tostadas and a spring roll bowl. The cafe is cash-free — rare in New Orleans — and aims to minimize waste with a glass-jar exchange program (cold drinks to go come in a jar for an extra $1 deposit, refunded when the jar is returned clean or dirty), and it plans to limit single-use items to customers who cannot participate in the exchange. Currently open Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Mid-City spot plans to debut a full back patio, serve alcohol, and stay open until 8 p.m. beginning in late September." - Clair Lorell
