"Opening Monday at 329 Columbus Avenue (at 76th Street), Asset is a modern American restaurant with Mediterranean touches set in an industrial space with soaring ceilings; I can see the owners aiming for a similar energetic vibe to their nearby restaurant Tessa. Tessa’s executive chef, John Schafer, will also oversee Asset and has put together a menu that includes lamb and manchego empanadas, filet mignon carpaccio, various pastas, grilled fish and meat, and a double-stack cheeseburger. Drinks come from beverage director Brandon Lester in collaboration with Soho’s Liquor Lab and include a smoked-in-the-glass cocktail made with bourbon, whiskey, amontillado sherry, brown sugar, and bitters. The highly designed, stylized space uses lots of wood, metal, and stone across two floors — a large solid-brass bar and 145 seats downstairs and an upstairs balcony with a smaller bar that accommodates 56 diners and doubles as a private-party space — and the programming leans younger with global music and a DJ Thursday through Saturday nights. The owners say it took a year to find the space and two years to build it, and they describe Asset as an amped-up, modern-industrial alternative to the more family-friendly spots on the Upper West Side; hours are weekdays 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and weekends 11 a.m. to 1 a.m." - Beth Landman
