"A sprawling, over-100-seat newcomer in Rittenhouse Square’s Center City, this kissaten-inspired restaurant skips sushi to spotlight homey, Western-leaning Japanese comforts like French onion soup a la Japonaise, kare pan (beef-filled buns), wagyu roast beef, katsu curry, and pizza toast, all built on a from-scratch bakery program turning out house-made shokupan, kare pan, steamed buns, and more. Executive chef and co-owner Justin Bacharach leads the kitchen alongside partner Jesse Ito, with early hours of 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday–Saturday, plans for weekend brunch and late-night, and reservations on Resy. After the kitchen closes at 11, a konbini-inspired late-night setup will serve egg sandwiches from the fridge and hot kare pan from a warmer. Drinks are designed to pair with the food: a sake and shochu list modeled after Royal Izakaya’s best-in-the-city selection and a nostalgic-leaning cocktail lineup featuring a Negroni with shochu, melon, and green Chartreuse, a chu-hai with buckwheat tea, an espresso martini with black sesame fat-washed vodka, and frozen options like a slushy Aperol spritz. The space, rebuilt from a former beer shop, channels Victorian touches and a retro ’80s vibe, with a comics-papered entry and a hot-pink neon sign glowing down Sansom Street." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme
