"Twice a week in the basement of 193 Henry Street, a blindfolded dining experience offers a four-course surprise menu with unlimited wine and can accommodate a range of dietary restrictions. Conceived by chef Abigail Hitchcock, the events deliberately remove sight so dishes are designed around aroma, texture, and tactile contrast rather than visual presentation; guests receive a blindfold and an orientation on how to interact with servers before dining. It typically takes about 15 minutes for senses to heighten, at which point diners begin using their hands, discovering elements like asparagus, and engaging more openly with neighbors—couples often become more affectionate. Menus have featured items such as a pureed corn soup paired with a ricotta-stuffed zucchini blossom, and guests frequently try to guess colors or ingredients, underscoring how color and texture shape taste perception. Begun as an experiment 17 years ago, the dinners are intended to be playful rather than tricking attendees, and staff are attentive to reluctant guests who may remove their blindfolds if needed." - Megan Paetzhold, Lucia Buricelli
