"Run by third-generation orchardist Josh Morgenthau in the Hudson Valley, this tree-fruit farm operates a robust pick-your-own program alongside sales at farmers' markets and through a CSA. U-pick began as a practical solution after a hailstorm in the 1980s left blemishes that supermarkets refused to accept, and it initially catered to bulk buyers buying large quantities for canning and pie-baking; over the past decade and a half the crowd shifted toward recreational visitors who pick only a few pounds, which proved less profitable. To allow for social distancing during the pandemic the farm moved to a reservation model—a flat $40 fee covers up to three people picking 20 pounds—and although that can be more expensive than buying the same fruit at a market, the fee reflects the full outdoor “apple experience” the operation provides. The owner stresses that U-pick has become essential to the farm's viability and that there is real satisfaction in harvesting produce you plan to cook with." - Rachel Sugar
