Seattle's Best Pop-Ups Of 2020 - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Located on the sidewalk above a couple of shrubs, Old Scratch is L’Oursin’s casual takeout pop-up. Their entire menu of little Southern sandwiches is kind of an ode to Martin’s potato rolls—they fill theirs with everything from fried buttermilk-marinated chicken thigh and popcorn shrimp to a smoked tofu BBQ sandwich that’s just as meaty as a slab of brisket. And don’t get us started on the smashburger, with salty, crispy edges and tart cornichons. They’re also selling Southern pantry items like Bojangles french fry seasoning, Duke’s mayonnaise, and those Toast Chee peanut butter crackers. You know, the ones you used to get from vending machines only as a last resort." - Carlo Mantuano, Aimee Rizzo

Lily's Salvadorean Restaurant

Salvadoran restaurant · Fairmount Park

Lillian Anaya Quintanilla has been selling her golden-brown, crispy pupusas & banana-leaf-wrapped tamales at farmers markets around the Seattle area for over 10 years, drawing customers willing to wait up to an hour for her food and Salvadoran-style horchata. On March 9 , 2022 , she finally opened her first restaurant. Like the food cart, the restaurant serves various types of pupusas (jalapeño and cheese and pork, to name a couple) & pork, chicken, & corn tamales, but there are some new dishes as well. The chiles rellenos on the menu, unlike the Mexican version, which is filled with just cheese, are stuffed with pork or chicken with green beans, carrots, potatoes, & mushrooms. The Salvadoran carne asada plate has thicker cuts than those at most Mexican restaurants and is served with chorizo sausage, fresh cheese, rice, beans, and avocado. And she’s still serving the Salvadoran-style horchata, called horchata de Morro, which is made with ground peanuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, and rice, among other ingredients & has a rich toasty, nutty flavor. Izaya’s painted mural @ Lily's - his intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into Lily’s world, to experience where she’s from and the things that made her happy. This captures the place where Lily learned about herself & shaped how she relates to the community, family, food, and her culture.
