"Hacienda Ramirez Cruz has as many microphones as the set of The Voice. On Thursdays, the Mexican restaurant supplies every person at every table with their own microphone so they can sing along to back-to-back Latin hits about heartbreak. It’s cathartic, fun, and sweaty (the Wynwood spot is almost entirely outdoors). The patio is filled with mismatched furniture and a disco ball that sparkles over confident singers and live musicians, who usually emerge around 9:30pm Thursday through Saturday. But a Thursday night dedicated to singing (and a little crying) is the best way to experience this place. Don’t expect too much from the food. They make decent but underseasoned Mexican dishes. Order the ribeye tacos, chips and guacamole, and plenty of mezcal to ease any stage fright. Food Rundown Guacamole It’s a whopping $18, but it’s a safe starter to nibble on before you start singing. photo credit: Hacienda Ramirez Cruz Queso Fundido Order it without the add-ons because the chorizo doesn’t do much except up the price. It comes with a side of warm tortillas. Eat it all as soon as it arrives. Otherwise, the cheese gets stiff and the tortillas get cold. PlayMute video credit: Mariana Trabanino Tacos De Ribeye The tacos taste great but the tortilla lacks structural integrity. Use any leftover blue corn tortillas from the queso fundido for extra support. photo credit: Hacienda Ramirez Cruz Ramírez Roll The use of “roll” here is a stretch. The fried cheese is rolled up and filled with pieces of ribeye and peppers, but all you really taste is cheese. Plus, it gets cold and stiff very quickly. Skip this. PlayMute video credit: Mariana Trabanino Flautas De Pollo The flautas are crunchy, satisfying, and come with a side of tomatillo salsa that’d taste better if it was spicier. PlayMute video credit: Mariana Trabanino Pastel Imposible It’s a chocolate cake and flan hybrid. It is, indeed, posible. But that doesn’t mean it should exist.
