"King Neptune would probably feel a long way from the sea, swapping his trident for a wooden spork and prodding batter at this chippy just off a roundabout in Edgware. There’s been a fish and chip shop in this spot since 1946 and old boys still totter in at lunch, choosing to steadfastly ignore the card machine and pay in cash. Bottles of vinegar are handed to regulars who lean over the counters and sauce their own fries before they’re wrapped, and the mushy peas and curry sauce here share the same texture. It’s your average neighbourhood chip shop: the fish is pretty mushy and doesn’t taste of much, and the batter is thick. The chips are decent, though, and the prices are reasonable. If you’re in the area, and in a pinch, just get these with some sauce. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Cod Our mum always told us (kind of), if you don’t have anything nice to say, praise the crispy batter. So what we will say is that this batter is crunchy and golden. That is all. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Chips Fluffy, fat, and piping hot. These are decent chip shop chips. They could be a little darker in colour, but overall, we like them. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Curry Sauce This curry sauce makes us feel nostalgic for the thick, slightly chunky versions of our childhood. It’s rich and savoury and, if you can get over the clagginess, our preferred sauce for dunking. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna
