"When you imagine a classic neighborhood Italian deli in your head, chances are it looks a little something like this great sandwich shop in Bridgeport. There’s a whole refrigerated case of meats and cheeses on display next to an old wood paneled counter, menus on the wall detailing all of the sandwiches and Italian ice flavors, and Al Capone and The Sopranos memorabilia all over the small space. There are only a few counter seats, so when it’s nice out, go spread out with a saucy breaded steak sandwich or spicy Italian with zippy housemade giardiniera on their grassy patio. Make sure to pick up a creamy pistachio-dusted cannoli, too—maybe even a second for the road. Food Rundown photo credit: John Ringor Spicy Italian Though more peppery than spicy, there’s no denying that the meaty stack of hot capicola, pepperoni, and hot soppressata is delicious, especially when complemented by the provolone, crisp lettuce and tomato, and tangy housemade dressing. If you do want some kick, ask them to throw some housemade hot giardiniera on there. photo credit: John Ringor Italian Breaded Steak This one’s for all of the hot sandwich people (we’re talking about temperature). The juicy steak covered in salty bread crumbs and bathed in a comforting blanket of savory tomato sauce and melty cheese is delicious. Sure, you’ll probably end up using a whole package of napkins and walk away with a few T-shirt stains, but it’s worth it." - John Ringor
