David Doughie's Bagelry - Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"After developing a cultlike following for their New York-style bagels at Austin farmers markets, David Doughie’s opened a trailer outside of Fleet Coffee on the East Side. Now, instead of battling long lines and limited supply, you have reliable access to Austin's best bagels four days a week. They're hand-rolled, and soft and chewy inside, with a dark crust covered in tiny bubbles and a perfect bite. Try a plain bagel with schmear, or get it topped with thick layers of smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, and onions. Just make sure to show up on the early side—they typically sell out about an hour before they close. photo credit: Richard Casteel Food Rundown Sesame Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese There are a ton of bagel and schmear combinations you can play around with, but the one we find ourselves going back to the most is the sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese. The bagel has a great crust that contrasts nicely with a thick layer of scallion cream cheese. photo credit: Richard Casteel Egg Sandy with Beef Barbacoa The barbacoa is rich and beefy, and the scrambled egg layer is thick and fluffy. Our bagel lacked the same chew we’ve experienced on other visits, but this is an overall tasty sandwich. Make sure to order a side of zugh salsa verde to complete the combo. photo credit: Richard Casteel Smoked Salmon Bagel When we want something a little more filling than a bagel with cream cheese, we get the smoked salmon bagel. The salmon is sliced thin (but piled thick), the cream cheese is silky smooth, and the capers and onions add just the right bite.
