Barbaco Tio - Review - Park Slope - New York - The Infatuation

"At Barbaco Tío, the steamed lamb barbacoa isn’t going to change your life, but it is a great takeout option to have in Park Slope. If the meat is sometimes a little dry, it’s nothing a little red or green salsa, or a dunk into a chickpea-heavy consommé, can’t fix. Even better—the tortillas are made fresh: you can watch a woman form balls of masa from an industrial-grade tub, and press them into thick circles. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute But the very best things about this colorful little shop are the large patio—where you can sip a Tajín-rimmed margarita—and their taco kits, with meats sold by the quarter kilo, which is ideal for a Prospect Park picnic. Watch the person behind the counter weigh your order before using a large cleaver to hack the lamb, pork, and chicken into bite-sized pieces on a chopping board. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Margarita A great margarita, served by an establishment that understands the extreme importance of a salt rim—and of a to-go drink option. Even if you're not destined for a huge taco feast, stopping here for a few of these and some guacamole is a wise choice. photo credit: Kate Previte Taco Kits The meats (our favorite is the barbacoa), are very simply prepared, and sometimes slightly dry, so stock up at the salsa bar. If you get your kit to go, they’ll include big tubs full of salsa, pickled jalapeño, and even whole, uncut limes. photo credit: Kate Previte Elote It’s not reinventing the wheel, and it never needed to. It’s just corn slick with mayo, cotija, and some chili flakes that pack an impressive punch. photo credit: Kate Previte Platanos Maduros The condensed milk dipping sauce served with these is an overly sweet choice, but the browned and caramelized maduros are pretty near perfect." - Willa Moore
