"Yoso makes the kind of reasonably priced sushi Miami needs more of. The business used to operate out of a food truck in the Design District, but it’s traded in its wheels for a baby blue six-seat counter in the back corner of Upper Buena Vista. photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc The best way to enjoy their nigiri, which is delicately scored and often topped with incredible housemade yuzu kosho, is to order a platter. Yoso's combination for two ($60) or four ($150) people comes with a crisp miso salad, salmon tataki, nigiri, and a maki roll. But if you're looking for a quick lunch or an easy Tuesday dinner, their poke, tempura, and katsu bowls are all reliable. Sit inside for sake and a conversation with the funny chefs, who might share stories from their days working in even smaller spaces. Food Rundown photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc Chicken Katsu Bowl The chicken thigh is incredibly crunchy, but what makes this such a perfect solo lunch or dinner is the portion size. Rice, cucumber, corn, edamame, and fanned-out slices of avocado are all diligently working together to ensure you leave very full for an even $20. Spicy Yellowtail Roll A not-too-sweet passion fruit dressing is the subtle yet catchy accessory that makes this roll elicit the good kind of tiny eyebrow raise. photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc Chirashi Roll This roll gives you a bit of tuna, salmon, and kampachi in one bite. Plus, it wears a singular dot of ikura like a little fedora, which is cute and delicious. photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc Chef's Selection Of Six Nigiri The chef’s selection of nigiri also comes in an order of twelve, if you’re trying to split this with someone. But both include a lovely showcase of Yoso’s sushi. The nigiri tend to be topped with a restrained enhancements, like togarashi, ikura, or yuzukosho mayo, none of which hide the quality of fish on display here. photo credit: Cleveland Jennings / @eatthecanvasllc Burnt Matcha Cheesecake Even in Miami’s bloated Basque cheesecake economy, this version makes us excited. The matcha flavor is subtle and the center is gooey—but not so runny that it looks like they put it in the oven for three milliseconds. Last time we were here, they said they were experimenting with a yuzu version. We’d eat that too." - Ryan Pfeffer
