Turkey And The Wolf is a New Orleans sandwich legend that's taking Nashville by storm - Review - Nashville - The Infatuation

"The ‘90s sure were great. And Turkey And The Wolf Ice House, an East Nashville location of their New Orleans sandwich shop, is here to bring a little of that era back. Cute tchotchkes are everywhere at this walk-up window under a draped carport. An inflatable turkey and a foam Budweiser cooler sit over by the silverware station. Flags of characters like Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hang from the pavilion ceiling. Coming here is like having a sandwich in a kid’s room. Except that sandwich isn’t a cute little PB&J—it’s a towering behemoth filled with bologna, hot mustard, and potato chips or slow-cooked collard greens and swiss cheese. Or, more recently, a crispy hashbrown patty, anchovy crème fraîche, and a healthy amount of glistening salmon roe. And each one is served on an old McDonald’s souvenir plate. Nothing about this place needs to be taken seriously except how good this food is. photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse Pause Unmute A lot of the offerings on the modest menu, though delicious, are a copy/paste from New Orleans. And while we love having Turkey And The Wolf in our backyard instead of a road trip’s length away, it would be nice to have a few more items that remind us we are, in fact, in Nashville. Still, with additions of submarines on freshly baked french longboys and ice cream sandwiches, they’re slowly distinguishing this one from its Bayou brother. All the seating is outdoor, though the pavilion has plastic draped walls for some heat—or, when the fans are on, a bit of shade and cool. The picnic tables on the lawn next to a large metal camper covered in string lights make you feel like you’ve been invited to the ultimate backyard party. This is fantastic for most of the year here, but we imagine it’ll be pretty limiting during the winter. Food Rundown Collard Green Melt This is one of Turkey and the Wolf’s signature inventions. Collard greens turn creamy and melty in their own right, get smothered in melted swiss, and drizzled in a perfectly vinegary dressing. Cole slaw adds crunch and the marble rye makes you reimagine every reuben you’ve ever had into this vegetarian version. Don’t you dare skip this one. photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse Fried Bologna School lunch nostalgia gets a glow-up. A sandwich of towering proportions, this combo of griddled bologna and practically a whole bag of chips put Turkey And The Wolf on the map and launched them into a bonafide sandwich empire. And as the OG, it’s one of the most ordered items on the menu next to the collard greens. The spicy mustard, mayo, and chip situation really makes it. photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse McCaviar This sandwich is made up of an expertly crispy hash brown in a buttery hamburger bun with little fishy firework pops of roe. Between that and the super tangy crème fraîche studded with lemon zest, it’s a decadent little number. And a struggle to stick to ordering just one. photo credit: Ann Walczak Chicken Pot Pie Empanada With a crackly crust and an umami-filled filling, this clearly-not-your-standard pot pie is rolled into a handheld beauty for easy delivery. It’s peppery and tangy with a subtle heat, and when dipped in the cool tarragon buttermilk sauce, it's easily one of the best things on the menu. photo credit: Turkey And The Wolf Icehouse Sweet Potato Waffle Fry Salad The waffle fries naturally get a bit soggy from all the toppings, but we say, soak it up, my friend. The peanuts and vegetables all meld together in a little slurry all over the top, and each bite delivers the perfect amount of heat. photo credit: Ann Walczak Grand Slam Toasty Ice Cream Sandwich It’s a trippy thing to blow on an ice cream sandwich, but you will for this one because it arrives piping hot. The burger bun surrounding the ice cream is super toasted—almost burned—but it tasted like an overly done s’more, so no complaints. The unfortunate part comes when all the super sweet little honeycomb crunchies fall off when you pick it up. Overall, the whole thing is sweet, on sweet, on sweet, and not our favorite. photo credit: Ann Walczak Cocktails The cocktails aren't an afterthought here. They have a frozen French 75 where you can really taste the prosecco. Too often, this cocktail just tastes like frozen lemonade. If you’re coming here in the summer, get this. There’s also a bourbon and Barq’s, which is exactly as it sounds—bourbon mixed with Barq’s root beer, served in a Muppet movie glass. photo credit: Ann Walczak" - Ann Walczak
