"Sandwich Sandwich is—believe it or not—a sandwich shop. Yes, this St. Paul’s spot is a Bristol import gone viral, where all eyes are on the sandwich bar. But if you just focus on the sandwiches, you’re doing it wrong. Because as exciting (read: overstimulating) as the sandwich station is, our favourite thing to get from this spot isn't a sandwich. It’s the buns. With fillings like crispy chicken and battered cod, the hot brioche bun is easier to order (you can go straight to the till and avoid the queue for the sandwich bar), and more enjoyable to eat (you don’t have to dislocate your jaw). At lunchtime, the queue snakes all the way out of the door and around the street, and it can be a long wait, because this isn’t a slop-it-on-and-send-it-out kind of sandwich shop. There’s a strict formula to each sarnie. The staff move like worker bees turned performers, taking orders from office lanyard-wearing groups. Thick slices of bread are over-filled (in our opinion) with fried chicken or scoops of tuna mayo mix, before being tightly wrapped in paper to form the kind of brick you could use for your next arm workout. While they’re very easy on the eyes, it’s still those buns that we’d return for. Food Rundown photo credit: Rianne Shlebak Southern Fried Chicken Hot Stack You’ll come for the sandwiches and have your head turned by this crowd-pleasing “hot stack”. Soft brioche buns are stuffed with crispy fried chicken, cheat-code hash browns, onion rings, and a creamy creole sauce. It’s all squished down so the comforting flavours mash together nicely. photo credit: Rianne Shlebak Tuna Crunch Sandwich This heavily filled number is a little disappointing. The tuna mix doesn’t have enough mayonnaise, the onions are cut too big, and it didn’t hold together well. photo credit: Rianne Shlebak Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich A stand-up, thicc sandwich, but the hot stack version is miles better. photo credit: Rianne Shlebak Coronation Chicken This is like a regular coronation chicken, except it’s got triple the amount of filling we usually like. Nice, but the ratio is way off and it’s not worth the queue. Oreo Cheesecake A little on the sweet side, this cheesecake is perfectly nice, but you’ll need all the stomach space you can get for the savoury stuff." - Rianne Shlebak
