"Lauter is located inside Southern Grist in East Nashville, and the restaurant and brewery share an endearing live-in-the-moment ethos when it comes to their menus. Hyper-seasonal and experimental, the two take a standard brewery night out and turn it into a proper culinary adventure. photo credit: Christen Clemens photo credit: Christen Clemens photo credit: Christen Clemens photo credit: Christen Clemens photo credit: Christen Clemens Lauter’s rotating menu is heavy on the rotation part, so view it as an opportunity to let go and let God when it’s time to order. This is the place to come when you’re tired of the standard pub grub—each dish has an exciting depth of flavor thanks to interesting ingredients (nori, squash pickles, cured egg yolks) without getting lost in the proverbial sauce. Not everything is a hit (we just can’t seem to get behind the boiled peanuts), but your odds are good. They also have another outpost at SG’s taproom in the Nations, but for the full experience, hit the one in East. Food Rundown photo credit: Christen Clemens Grist Burger This is the only thing that’s always on the menu. Lauter’s burger surprises with its flavor—get it just with cheese to let the dry aged beef shine. It’s so well-executed in its simplicity that we’ll almost forgive Lauter for not automatically serving it with fries (you gotta order those extra). Almost. Country Ham Toast This is a decadent country ham toast that’s gooey, cheesy, and sweet with a hint of spice. The bread and butter jalapeños and nori are excellent finishing touches. photo credit: Christen Clemens Fried Potatoes If the fried potatoes are on the menu, don’t hesitate. These heartbreakingly-good, golden nuggets are the perfect vessels for Lauter’s housemade fry sauce. Wings Like the potatoes, these wings are immaculately fried with not an ounce too much batter or grease. They’re marinated in adjika and yogurt and topped with bonito flakes, all served with white BBQ sauce. These can hang with any wings in the city." - Bailey Freeman
