"We've never come so close to saying “thank you” to an oven until we met the one at Dads Bakery. In the morning, Dads Bakery makes excellent whole-wheat sourdough bread in it, and in the evening, Wizard Hat Pizza uses it for crispy sourdough pies. Thomas, the person behind Dads, got his start as head baker at Leo and Ops, before selling bread wholesale to restaurants like LaRina. Now, he spends his mornings at Anything, a bar in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, displaying his baked goods at a metal table stationed in front of the open kitchen. In addition to sourdough loaves, he makes sfogliatelle, baguettes, and—the thing you can't leave without—bombolone. An Italian-style donut, these have a crunchy outside, a soft moist inside, and a not-too-sweet ricotta filling. If they have the apple butter one on special, get it. On a recent visit, we witnessed a girl approximately five years old receive her bombolone, look up, and say, "I love you, Thomas." photo credit: Willa Moore" - Willa Moore
