Dang Hot 89 Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Fans of Nashville-style hot chicken won’t need an address to find Dang Hot 89—the smell of sizzling cayenne pepper cuts straight through the North Austin air like a bat signal. For everyone else, just plug Celis Brewery into your GPS. This truck has some of the juiciest, most flavorful fried chicken in town. The breading is crispy, and the outer spice layer on each piece resembles the red tint of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. The only downside is that heat levels can be inconsistent. We’ve tried a medium that made us cry, but we’ve also had a “dang hot” (the spiciest option, allegedly) that barely tickled the tongue. If you’re looking to test the limits of human spice tolerance, there are more consistent options in town, like Tumble 22 and Hattie B’s. But if you’re a poultry enthusiast simply looking for great tenders, wings, and fried chicken sandwiches, Dang Hot 89 is everything you need in a food trailer. photo credit: Richard Casteel Food Rundown photo credit: Richard Casteel Tenders The meat is tender from end to end, with crispy breading that adds great texture and contrast. If you’re looking for tenders, these are among Austin’s best. photo credit: Richard Casteel Boneless Thighs These are pretty thin and not quite as juicy as the tenders, but thanks to all the fat in the meat, they still come out pretty moist. We prefer the tenders, but the thighs are a solid alternative. photo credit: Richard Casteel Fried Tender Sandwich Everything you need to know about this is right there in the name. It’s a good chicken sandwich, but unless you really like carbs, we’d just order the tenders instead." - Nicolai McCrary
