"Built by the Celts at the confluence of the Sava and Danube and later home to a Roman castrum, this imposing stronghold has been destroyed and rebuilt over centuries, contested by Byzantines, Hungarians, Serbian kings, and the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires; its layered architecture blends Ancient Roman walls, Serbian ramparts, and Turkish and Austrian additions. Today it hosts cultural and music events (many in the Barutana club), with places to visit inside the walls including the Military Museum, the Roman Well, the tombs of national heroes, and the Natural History Museum set in the old sentry building. The surrounding park offers breathtaking views of the rivers and Novi Beograd, and you’ll also find two Orthodox churches (Ruzica and Sveta Petka), the Cvijeta Zuzorić art pavilion and the Music Pavilion, play areas, sports fields, restaurants, and even the city zoo with 150 species and 1,700 animals." - Annalisa Leopolda Cavaleri
