What to Do When You Lose Your Passport in 2025

"To replace my lost passport I had to go through the U.S. Embassy/Consulate routine: file a police report, print and complete the State Department forms, visit in the morning with the police report, forms, proof of travel, and a passport photo, wait in line, pay the fee (about $120 USD), go home for lunch and come back in the afternoon to wait again and collect an emergency temporary passport; these temporary passports are valid for three or six months and are intended only to get you home, although Europe often waives the six-month validity rule and the office advised avoiding trying to re-enter the UK on a temporary passport." - Matthew Kepnes
