Is Central America Safe to Visit? (Updated 2025)

"I started my nomadic life here and it remains one of my favorite regions for backpacking: flanked by the Pacific and Atlantic, it connects Mexico to South America and is made up of seven countries. It can be challenging to get around, but it offers incredible beauty, abundant nature, picturesque beaches, and affordable prices; despite a history of political upheaval and civil unrest, the region has become a hotspot for travelers, surfers, and retirees because it has something for everyone while still being budget-friendly. Petty theft is the most common threat, so always be aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas, separate your cash, take taxis at night (have your accommodation call them), be careful on public transit, and buy travel insurance to stay safe and healthy while exploring." - Matthew Kepnes
