"Located in southern Mozambique, Tofo Beach is a small coastal town with a laid-back vibe where I spent long, lazy days in hammocks, pools, or on the sand and never felt ripped off — a beer ran just under 125 MZN, seafood ranged from about 400 MZN (barracuda or prawns) to 750 MZN (whole lobster), and a private beachfront bungalow was around 6,500 MZN. It’s an amazing place to dive and see big creatures like whale sharks, manta rays, whales, and dolphins, but it’s also refreshingly uncrowded: tourism actually seemed on the decline, the beaches and sand stayed clean, and the travelers you meet tend to be interesting (Peace Corps volunteers, Australians and Americans working locally, South Africans, or other overland travelers). Locals were friendly and often showed me around, took me to late-night dance parties and art galleries, and I even saw examples of travelers forming genuine local friendships (for instance, an American named Nate invited Orlando, who had never left his village, to join his trip). For activities, you can take boat trips to offshore islands, ride quad bikes through sand dunes (quad rental about 3,400 MZN) to find secluded enclaves or reach the distant ATM, or simply relax for weeks reading and watching sunsets.
