As part of the ‘Smart Travel’ project, from 2025 passengers travelling through this airport will be able to check in, clear security and board using just facial recognition, with sensors installed so travellers pass through three checkpoints before departure: one to register their likeness, one to check in and one to board. The initial rollout of cutting-edge biometrics at Zayed International Airport is described by its CEO as underscoring a dedication to enhancing airport experiences through innovation and technology, ensuring efficiency, convenience and superior service, and once fully implemented it aims to be the world’s first airport with biometrics integrated at every stage for a seamless, safe and secure journey. According to statements cited, the system will use the UAE’s Federal Authority database to automatically authenticate travellers so passengers will no longer need to register upon arriving at the airport, and Abu Dhabi Airports says the project will enhance airline performance by eliminating the need for expensive infrastructure expansions and by effectively detecting fraud and forgery in identification documents. - Liv Kelly
