"An island-bound national park in Lake Superior that requires a ferry or seaplane ride and is reachable from multiple cities in Minnesota and Michigan. Visitors leave their cars on the mainland, creating a largely car-free, family-friendly experience with more freedom for kids and a near-perfect safety rating (9.9/10). The park offers extensive outdoor opportunities — over 165 miles of hiking trails, countless islands, bays, lakes and waterways ideal for kayaking or canoeing — and features 36 campgrounds with tent sites, outhouses and water sources. Lakeshore campgrounds are easily accessed via water taxi from Rock Harbor Lodge or the Voyageur II ferry, and lodging options include Rock Harbor Lodge and the Windigo camper cabins. Camping is free for groups of six or fewer, campsites are first-come, first-served without advance reservations, and overall visitation is low (about 29,000 in 2023); the park is closed from Nov. 1 through April 15.
